The City of Chicago handles complaints through the Chicago Commission on Human Relations, and complaints must be made within 300 days. In wider Illinois, complaints are handled by the Illinois Department of Human Rights and must be filed within one year from the discriminatory action. The city of Evanston and the city of Naperville also add protections for source of income as a protected class. Chicago adds parental status and source of income as protected classes. It also adds protections for perceived members of the disabled, sexual orientation, or gender identity, and individuals who are associated with disabled persons. The Illinois Fair Housing Act extends protections against discrimination on the basis of age, ancestry, sexual orientation, gender identity, marital status, military status, domestic violence victims, and pregnancy. The Fair Housing Act protects against discrimination on the basis of race, color, national origin, religion, sex, familial status, and disability. You will find a Lions Club member at the entance to many local businesses on that day. Lions will be giving away rolls of candy and accepting monetary contributions. We help raise money the 2nd weekend in October on Candy Day to support the Lions of Illinois Foundation's thirteen programs to provide to the hearing and visually impared in Illinois. The parade is every year, the Friday after Thanksgiving. We usually have no trouble dispensing 70 gallons. One is open to Highland High School graduates and the other is open to any student who lives in the Highland School district regardless of school attended.Īt the annual Christmas parade welcoming Santa Claus to Highland, we prepare and give away hot chocolate to show our appreciation to the community for the support we get throughout the year. We award two $1500 scholarships each year. Four times each year we and the Highland High School LEOs clean our section. During the two weekends after Christmas, the Lions sponsor a fifth grade tournament and a sixth grade tournament. The Lions provide uniforms, referees, scorekeepers and, when needed, coaches. It began in 1978 with 32 girls on four teams and has grown to over 160 girls on eleven teams plus four travelling teams which play teams from nearby communities. The Highland Lions sponsor a girls basketball league for girls ages nine through thirteen. Please check back here for details for the 2024 event. There are five different events to choose from: Lions Biathlon, Lions Team Biathlon, Leo Biathlon, 5 mile run, and new for 2023, a 5K run. We attract approximately 450 athletes from Southern Illinois and the St Louis area. Our annual Earl Steiner Memorial Day Biathlon is the single largest one day fund raiser we have. We literally cook and sell a ton of pork at the Madison County Fair, Peanut Butter and Jam Festivals, homecomings, and many other events around Highland. We cook and sell brats, porkburgers, and hot dogs throughout the year to raise money to fund our community support projects.
